SERVERS - Back-end

Definition

Historically companies developed their core business services such as human resources, accounting and billing on mainframes, Sun systems or Unisys boxes. Many of these applications are not distributed and run on one large centralised system - they are "monolithic". There is often no clear way to split out these applications so a migration to Intel architecture requires the use of a very high specification server.
