RASUM - Reliability

Definition

  • Measured by the Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF). This is a quantifiable feature not just a concept.

  • Increased by integration. By adding a component directly onto the motherboard rather than using an add in card the reliability can be enhanced.

  • Increased by redundancy. The reliability can be increased by ensuring the system can continue to function despite the failure of a critical subsystem such as a hard disk, power supply or fan.

  • Directly impacted by the other four concepts. In other words, systems that are highly available, serviceable, usable and manageable are also likely to be highly reliable.
