CASE STUDIES: Upgrade Program

 

 
Background

ESP has been providing the R&D labs of a household name in razor manufacture with their IT needs for a number of years. During this time they purchased nearly 200 ESP computers with the result that they had a wide variation in specification throughout the organisation.


Solution

To assist with lowering the total cost of ownership of the ESP computers they decided to introduce a phased upgrade program to achieve the following aims:

  1. All users would have the same systems and would therefore be able to use the same applications.
  2. All users would have their software changed so that they were all using the same applications. In this manner document distribution was possible without potential incompatibilities.
  3. Support staff could work in a more consistent environment.

The principle condition of the process was to ensure that the users experienced no down time. The only way this project could succeed was to collect a manageable number of systems after the customer’s working day, upgrade the systems and return them first thing the next day. By working in this manner a hundred plus systems were upgraded without any of the users experiencing loss in usage.
