Background
ESP has been providing the R&D labs of a household name in razor manufacture
with their IT needs for a number of years. During this time they purchased nearly
200 ESP computers with the result that they had a wide variation in specification
throughout the organisation.
Solution
To assist with lowering the
total cost of ownership of the ESP computers they
decided to introduce a phased upgrade program to achieve the following aims:
- All users would have the same systems and would therefore be able to use
the same applications.
- All users would have their software changed so that they were all using the
same applications. In this manner document distribution was possible
without potential incompatibilities.
- Support staff could work in a more consistent environment.
The principle condition of the process was to ensure that the users experienced no
down time. The only way this project could succeed was to collect a manageable
number of systems after the customer’s working day, upgrade the systems and
return them first thing the next day. By working in this manner a hundred plus
systems were upgraded without any of the users experiencing loss in usage.
